Know God – Isaiah 6 (part 2)

“And one (angel) cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” (verse 4)

In Seeing God, Isaiah witnessed the angels worshiping God for His Holiness. This was a “Knowledge” of God that Isaiah had not yet applied to his own life:

“Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” (verse 5)

He was acutely aware of his uncleanness, in the view of God’s Holiness.

What do you know about God?

What have you applied of your knowledge of God?

Knowing God is a very person and individual thing, our perception of Who God is is shown by our concept of God in the practice of everyday life. In normal english: What we actually know of God will change the way we live.

So Who is God? What Is He defined as? What are His attributes? (Please take time to read the passages listed)

God is Love – 1 John 4:16
God is Light – 1 John 1:5 (there is no darkness in Him)
God is a Spirit – John 4:24
God is Eternal, Immortal, Invisible and Only Wise – 1Tim 1:17
God’s Omniscience and Omnipresence are more than man can begin to understand – Ps 139
To name just a few.

I was asked in a class to explain the nature of God. Needless to say, I wasn’t able to do God’s nature justice. Here’s what I came up with:

“God’s attributes as we see them from His word along side His actions and the correction and care He gives everyday are all He thinks we need in order to understand His nature.
His Nature: Too Big for our universe, too eternal for our time, unspotted light.
All giving Love, unwavering Justice, untarnished Righteousness, powerful over ALL,
knowledgeable beyond comprehension
Invisible, yet a consuming Fire.”

The pages of God’s Word are filled with His attributes, by searching these pages we are able to truly KNOW our God.

Like Isaiah, in view of God, we should be very aware of our own state; fallen, feeble, and unclean.

“Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:”
“And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine
iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.”(verses 6-7)

Isaiah was cleansed of his uncleanness. God offers each of us this same cleansing. This mercy is yet another manifestation of God’s nature.

God is willing to show Himself to us, and is merciful to cleanse us when we know Him. How should we respond to all God has done for us? for all that God is to us? (More next week)
